The Ranger has a “bat detector” that reduces the frequency of bats calls to a level we can hear as a series of clicks. Look out for barn owls and listen for their eerie screech, their young ones snorting and snoring from nests in the tower walls, and tawny owls hooting in the wood. As the night deepens, cast your eyes heavenward for a possible glimpse of the perseid meteor shower, a yearly event.

Join the rangers for a hike up a beautiful hidden wee glen to a splendid rustic log cabin wildlife hide set in the forest and overlooking the wild moorland landscape. From here we can look out for the majestic herd of Red Deer and watch the skies for ravens and buzzards. Approx 3 mile round trip with ascent of 210mtrs. Come to the bird hide in Spynie Loch for a view of the many ducks, swans and other wildfowl that swim and wade in the loch. Diving mergansers, flotillas of widgeon and many other birds including herons are a common sight and there is always a chance of seeing the elusive otter, whilst (almost) guaranteed of seeing a red squirrel up close and personal!
Join the Ranger in a walk up Moray’s most distinctive hill, height 840 mtrs (ascent of 550mtrs), where we will keep a look out for mountain hare, red grouse and ptarmigan and learn about mountain flora and footpath restoration along the way. If the visibility is good, the views from the summit are spectacular. Bring plenty of refreshments and be prepared for all weathers, even if it’s sunny at the bottom. The annual Great River Ness Raft Race is one of Inverness City's most colourful events. The last raft race is followed by the popular Duck Race.
